Parties & Dances
IYC members know how to have a good time. With at least one special event a month during high season, there are many opportunities to dress up, dress down or dress crazy in the interest of enjoying friends and having some fun. Here are some of the recurring events that happen during the year.

IYC Birthday Party

Held the first Saturday in September after the annual shutdown ends, this informal dinner party provides a time of reflection and opportunity to add another candle on the club birthday cake. It also marks the beginning of the busy fall and winter season.

Commodore's Ball

This formal dinner/dance honors the current Commodore. All members attending pass reviewing line of the current Flag Officers to extend words of encouragement and commendation. The event may take place on one or two evenings. If two, all Flag Officers attend both nights and the two nights are identical--same band; same special menu; same Flag Officers.

Christmas Ball

This semi-formal event ushers in the holiday season and rounds out "Lighting of the Fleet." (See Special Events under Marine.) On the Saturday evening immediately following Lighting of the Fleet, the decorated boats, belonging to members, are requested to remain tied up in the yacht basin while the ball is celebrated in commemoration of the holiday season. Members attending enjoy a special dinner.

Egg Nog Party

This Christmas Eve daytime event provides the Commodore an opportunity to greet IYC families and wish them a happy holiday. Egg nog and a light repast are enjoyed by all who attend.

New Year's Ball

This festive formal celebration provides an opportunity to say good-bye to the old year and joyfully welcoming the New Year.

Superbowl Party

Members gather in early February for a casual pot-luck dinner party to watch the game and root for their favorite team. This year, "proposition bets" were offered during the game with wagers made with "funny money." Following the game, prizes were auctioned with the proceeds from successful bettors.

Change of Watch

This formal event is held in early March to mark the beginning of the new Watch. It's a ceremonious evening when outgoing officers remove their flags from the staff as the new officers raise their flags and assume command. It's an exceptional occasion with limited seating, and a special dinner awaits all who attend.

Trivia Night

This is a monthly event at which members form teams of up to eight players to test their trivia skills in a hotly contested competition, which follows dinner. Members invite club friends to form a team and make dinner reservations together at one table. Other members, when placing their dinner reservations, can ask to be placed at a trivia table where they are heartily welcomed.

Playing card and board games is a popular activity in the club. In addition to the groups listed below, women should check out the Isle-ettes page on this site for many additional card and board game groups.

Bridge

There is a weekly Duplicate Bridge on Wednesdays. Many of the players meet for dinner in the Commodore's Grill before the game. There is also a ladies' duplicate bridge game for experienced players the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Lunch precedes the game. Men also have a weekly bridge game on Fridays with lunch preceding the game. Partners are drawn at random. All levels of players are welcome.

Euchre

This newly formed group meets Wednesday evenings to play Euchre. Many of the players meet for dinner before the game.

Partners' Pinochle

Pinochle players meet the second and fourth Tuesdays each month, again, with most meeting before the game for dinner. One of the co-chairs will arrange a partner if needed or couples can play together.

Poker

Poker is played most Thursday evenings in the Bridge Building except when there is a special event at the club. Games are dealer's choice with no wild cards, but high-low games are allowed.

Technology Club

The Technology Club provides a forum for the exchange of information related to all forms of electronic technology, including computers, television, other electronic devices, and their uses. Bi-monthly afternoon meetings feature formal presentations and informal discussions on topics of mutual interest.

Courses, taught by professionals, also are provided from time to time on the use of computers, software and other devices.

Isle-ettes

The Isle-ettes is a women's organization started in 1976. Its purpose is to provide social, recreational and educational programs to our members. The Isle-ettes also supports the objectives of the Board of Directors of the Isles Yacht Club. All women members of the Isles Yacht Club are eligible to participate.

Our meetings are held every 2nd Tuesday of the Month. Beginning with a social hour, members gather for coffee at 9:30AM and the meeting begins at 10:30AM. Dress code is smart casual. There is a set program for each meeting which changesmonth to month and can include decorating ideas, guest speakers, health issues, money matters, food and entertaining, book reviews, gardening, travel and leisure, storytelling and just about any subject you can think of. Lunch is always something spectacular and is served immediately following the program.

The Isle-ettes are responsible for providing the IYC general membership with donations such as dining room china and chargers, furniture for the library, monies to help build the handicap ramp to the marina, and much more. Throughout the year the Isle-ettes hold fundraisers to obtain the goals set forth by its Executive Board.

This year the Isle-ettes are working to raise funds to provide the membership with a live band for dancing at least once per month and to support other worthwhile club activities.

Our fundraising calendar is as follows:

Other Activities

Book Club

The IYC Book Club, which meets the first Monday of the month, provides a venue for discussing books of interest to club members. Its October meeting consists of short presentations of members' favorite recent "reads". For other meetings we choose two books, a fiction and a non-fiction, for discussion. The selections are chosen by the members, usually several months in advance. We have also tried to include book selections of "books on tape" for visually handicapped. Every member is welcome to come to any meeting. All are invited to help choose and discuss selections.

Lecture Series

The lecture series was begun to explore the interesting backgrounds, interests, and talents of Isles Yacht Club members and to bring members' attention to actions taking place in Punta Gorda and Charlotte County that may impact club members. Six or seven lectures are held each year. Club members are encouraged to help bring the most interesting and timely speakers to our club.

Singles Group

This group provides an opportunity for singles to join other singles in enjoying Club activities. It promote singles participation in club functions and reaches out to all, singles, particularly new ones. A special singles table is provided at most club functions. A Knotty Singles column in the LOG to keeps members abreast of activities.

Tours

Many IYC members enjoy organizing and/or participating in big ship cruises sponsored by the club or FCYC. Itineraries may include the Caribbean Islands or the Panama Canal. Land/air tour destinations include places like New York City, Washington DC, Paris or London. Local bus trips are also planned to special events such as the opera in Sarasota or the Miami boat show. Tour announcements are posted in the LOG and in email communiqués to club members.
