IYC members know how to have a good time. With at least one special event a month during high season, there are many opportunities to dress up, dress down or dress crazy in the interest of enjoying friends and having some fun. Here are some of the recurring events that happen during the year.
IYC Birthday PartyHeld the first Saturday in September after the annual shutdown ends, this informal dinner party provides a time of reflection and opportunity to add another candle on the club birthday cake. It also marks the beginning of the busy fall and winter season. Commodore's BallThis formal dinner/dance honors the current Commodore. All members attending pass reviewing line of the current Flag Officers to extend words of encouragement and commendation. The event may take place on one or two evenings. If two, all Flag Officers attend both nights and the two nights are identical--same band; same special menu; same Flag Officers. ![]() Christmas BallThis semi-formal event ushers in the holiday season and rounds out "Lighting of the Fleet." (See Special Events under Marine.) On the Saturday evening immediately following Lighting of the Fleet, the decorated boats, belonging to members, are requested to remain tied up in the yacht basin while the ball is celebrated in commemoration of the holiday season. Members attending enjoy a special dinner. Egg Nog PartyThis Christmas Eve daytime event provides the Commodore an opportunity to greet IYC families and wish them a happy holiday. Egg nog and a light repast are enjoyed by all who attend.
New Year's BallThis festive formal celebration provides an opportunity to say good-bye to the old year and joyfully welcoming the New Year. Superbowl PartyMembers gather in early February for a casual pot-luck dinner party to watch the game and root for their favorite team. This year, "proposition bets" were offered during the game with wagers made with "funny money." Following the game, prizes were auctioned with the proceeds from successful bettors. Change of WatchThis formal event is held in early March to mark the beginning of the new Watch. It's a ceremonious evening when outgoing officers remove their flags from the staff as the new officers raise their flags and assume command. It's an exceptional occasion with limited seating, and a special dinner awaits all who attend. Trivia NightThis is a monthly event at which members form teams of up to eight players to test their trivia skills in a hotly contested competition, which follows dinner. Members invite club friends to form a team and make dinner reservations together at one table. Other members, when placing their dinner reservations, can ask to be placed at a trivia table where they are heartily welcomed.
